Former Brazilian national midfielder Arouca, was doing a sideline TV interview a few months ago when opposing fans began to chant "monkey, monkey, monkey." Those taunting hit him with another jab: Go to Africa and find a team. Get out of here.
President Dilma Rousseff, who has pledged a "World Cup without racism," tweeted quickly: "It is unacceptable that Brazil, the country with the largest black population after Nigeria, has racism issues." It does, and Brazilians are slowly waking up to it.
"The Brazilian form of racism is worse than apartheid because it works on the basis of deception," said Elisa Larkin Nascimento, director of the Afro-Brazilian Studies and Research Institute in Rio. "The biggest leap was to get the society to talk about racism and realize that, in fact, it does exist in Brazil."
Brazil’s present World Cup team is made up of 90 percent black or mixed-race players, though Brazilian fans attending World Cup matches are predominantly white. Much of the game is still closed to the black and poor. Most have been priced out of many of the 12 World Cup stadiums, built or renovated at a cost of $4 billion _ 80 percent public money.

Yes, You Can Blame the Moon for a Bad Night’s Sleep --
Yes, You Can Blame the Moon for a Bad Night’s Sleep

If you were tossing and turning at your pillow this week, you’re not necessarily a lunatic. The recent full moon might be to blame for your poor sleep.
In the days close to a full moon, people take longer to doze off, sleep less deeply, and sleep for a shorter time, even if the moon isn’t shining in their window, a new study has found.
Anecdotal evidence has long suggested that people’s sleep patterns, moods, and even aggression is linked to moon cycles.
Between 2000 and 2003, biologist Christian Cajochen of the University of Basel in Switzerland and his colleagues had collected detailed data on the sleep patterns of 33 healthy volunteers.
Using electroencephalograms (EEG) that measure brain activity, they recorded how deep and how long each participant’s nightly sleep was in a controlled, laboratory setting. They found a striking association between poor sleep and lunar cycles.

NYC mayor’s plan for rail strike? I’m outta here
New York’s tabloid newspaper front pages next week are easy to imagine: a photo of a nightmarish traffic jam caused by a strike at the largest U.S. commuter railroad juxtaposed with a shot of Mayor Bill de Blasio sunning himself on an Italian beach.
Despite the potentially damaging political optics, the Democratic mayor appears set on embarking Friday on a 10-day Italian vacation in the face of a looming Long Island Rail Road strike, which if it happens Sunday could paralyze portions of the largest U.S. city.
The mayor had said he would return from his trip if a crisis arose but signaled this week that he believed his team could manage without him.
Even before the Long Island Rail Road labor talks broke down, the trip, funded in part by taxpayers, raised eyebrows. De Blasio has been in office only since January, and his vacation is scheduled to last longer than those of recent mayors. (AP)
